Through the generous support if its contributors, the Penfield Music Commission Project has commissioned over 300 original works of music since 1982. Guided by a volunteer Board of Directors, comprised of educators, students, parents and community members, the Project mission is to foster the development of the creative process of musical composition and performance through collaborative experiences with a variety of composers, guest artists and organizations. Our focus is on music written specifically to be performed by school-age students, including music for choral and instrumental groups at elementary, middle school and high school levels.
Bringing composers and artists in close working relationships with students is a high priority for the Project. Past guests have included Regina Carter, Kevin Mahogany, Stefon Harris, Max Roach, Sydney Hodkinson, Slide Hampton, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Jeff Tyzik, and many others. Collaborative partners include the Smithsonian Institution, National Endowment for the Arts, the George Eastman House of Photography, the Strong Children’s Museum, the Brannen-Cooper Fund, Harvard Project Zero, the New York Council of the Arts, the Eastman School of Music and the Rochester Flute Association.
PMCP projects have been awarded the Smithsonian Award for Education and the Harvard-Radcliffe Award for Teacher Innovation.
The Penfield Music Commission Project is supported entirely by private, corporate and foundation contributions. For more information, please contact:
